Lando Norris is one of the most promising of the 2021 Formula 1 Drivers. He has shown incredible pace, determination, and skill in a Formula 1 car. Born on November 13, 1999, Lando’s father, Adam Norris is a retired pensions manager and is one of Bristol‘s richest people and his mother Cisca (nee Wauman) is from the Flanders region of Belgium. Lando is the second oldest alongside three siblings, with two younger sisters Flo and Cisca, and an older brother Oliver, who also competed in karting. A question that Lando often gets is whether he was named after Lando Calrissian from Star Wars, and the answer to that question is that Lando’s mother didn’t even really watch Star Wars, and just thought Lando would be a good name.
Norris has both British and Belgian citizenship, but he competes under the British flag since he was born in Bristol, England, and he grew up in Glastonbury. He began racing in karts at the age of 7. By the age of around 13, he was racing in international karting championships. And at the age of 14, Norris became the youngest-ever karting champion when he won the CIK-FIA KF Championship, which is the highest tier of karting. However, despite being the karting champion, Norris wasn’t able to race in Formula 4 or Formula 3 just yet. He raced in the Ginetta Junior Championship for one season in 2014, until he finally got a contract with Carlin Motorsport to race in the MSA Formula Series. This series was a Formula 4 series that ran for one year. But Lando didn’t need more than that to prove his talent.
He won the series and decided to race in the Toyota Racing Series before making a temporary step up to Formula 3, and a full-time step up to Formula Renault 2.0. Norris’s junior career proves that you need to be the absolute best to be in Formula 1. Norris won the Toyota Racing Series, he won both of the Formula Renault 2.0 series he took part in. And then there was Formula 3. Norris DOMINATED the 2017 European Formula 3 Championship, taking the title by 53 points, a MASSIVE margin for a junior formula. The only championship that broke Norris’s amazing streak was the 2018 Formula 2 Championship. Norris lost the title to George Russell by 68 points. But Norris’s incredible talent didn’t go unnoticed. McLaren announced that Lando Norris would be one of their drivers for the 2019 Formula 1 Season, and Norris races for McLaren to date.
Norris’s Formula 1 career is certainly applaudable. In his first season of Formula 1, he finished 11 races in the points. In only his 2nd race in Formula 1, he finished in 6th place, which is incredible. He finished 2019 ready to take on 2020. And 2020 was nothing short of phenomenal for Lando Norris. In the very first race of the season, he pushed himself to the limit, and just managed to claim his very first podium in Formula 1. In 2020, Lando failed to score points in only 4 races, and he REALLY took the fight to his rivals and to his teammate. He consistently performed, and, in 2021, he’s looking to bridge the gap between the front of the field and the midfield with the help of his new McLaren teammate, Daniel Ricciardo.
