Max Emilian Verstappen was born on 30 September 1997, in Hasselt, Belgium. His father, Jos Verstappen, is a Dutch former Formula 1 driver, and his Belgian mother, Sophie Kumpen, had raced in karting. Even though Max was born and grew up in Belgium, he feels more Dutch. He spent more time with his father due to his racing career, and he grew up near the Dutch border. Verstappen said that he used to go to the Netherlands during the day, and had friends there. He grew up surrounded by Dutch people. He only slept in Belgium at night, but during the day, he was in the Netherlands. So he decided to race under the Dutch flag, with his FIA Super License being a Dutch racing license.
Max Verstappen is only 23 years old, yet he has already made his very own legacy in Formula 1. Verstappen is one of the quickest and one of the most talented of the 2021 Formula 1 Drivers. He’s also one of the youngest. At the mere age of 17, he got his first experience in Formula 1. He drove for Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) in a free practice session at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. Verstappen became the youngest driver to race a Formula 1 car. A couple of months later, at the age of 17 years and 166 days, Verstappen broke another F1 record. He became the youngest driver to take part in a Formula 1 race and in a Formula 1 World Championship.
Verstappen got into Formula 1 incredibly young since he skipped many junior formulae. In 2013, he only tested Formula Renault, Formula Renault 2.0, and Formula Renault 3.5 cars. In early 2014, Verstappen raced in the Florida Winter Series. Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi, 2 of the 20 current F1 drivers, also succeeded in this series. The Florida Winter Series only took place in 2014 and was cancelled ahead of 2015. Verstappen had moderate success in this series and went on to race in the European Formula 3 Championship.
This is where Red Bull saw that Verstappen had a lot of potential. Soon enough, Verstappen became part of Red Bull’s driver academy. At the end of the European F3 season, Verstappen finished 3rd in the championship. However, in 2015, he made a GIANT leap, straight to Formula 1. It was SHOCKING, but Max Verstappen and Red Bull proved that Red Bull knew what they were doing. He kept getting better and better. Verstappen first raced for Toro Rosso but got promoted to Red Bull Racing in the middle of the 2016 season. He became the youngest F1 winner, the youngest podium finisher. The list of Verstappen’s achievement is quite long, ye it is not finished yet.
Verstappen has astonished the F1 world and has now clearly become the leading driver at Red Bull. In 2021, Verstappen is hoping to become Drivers’ World Champion, and he’s hoping that, along with his teammate Sergio Perez, he can make Red Bull Racing 5-time Constructors’ World Champions. It is true that Verstappen still needs some time to completely mature and to complete himself as a driver, but he can still pull of a title with the tools and talent he has right now.
