Sergio Pérez Mendoza, mainly known as Sergio Perez or Checo Perez, was born on January 26, 1990. He was born in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, and is the youngest child of Antonio Pérez Garibay and Marilú Mendoza de Pérez. Racing is a big part of Checo’s family. Perez’s older brother, Antonio Perez Mendoza, was a stock car driver who raced in the NASCAR Mexico Series. But Sergio decided to go to Formula 1. It wasn’t an easy journey to the pinnacle of motorsport. Being from Mexico, it was very difficult to get to such a European-based sport. But the Mexican telecommunications company Telmex wanted to sponsor Mexican racing drivers. And when Perez raced in karting in Mexico, he proved his racing talent, and Telemx sponsored him through the junior racing categories, before their sister company Telcel became Checo’s F1 sponsors.
Checo Perez is already a veteran in Formula 1 and has established himself as one of the most talented of the 2021 Formula 1 Drivers. He began his F1 career in 2011 with Sauber and went to McLaren for 2013. McLaren was meant to be a top team, but in 2013, McLaren had a horrible year. 2013 was the start of a decline for the team. Perez having a bad year with McLaren meant he couldn’t exactly prove his talent to any top teams. So the Mexican racer went to Force India, a team that wasn’t exactly a successful team at first, but they turned into a team that topped the midfield. It was a better team than McLaren, and in the 7 seasons he spent with the team, he achieved 10 podiums.
Perez invested in the team in 2018 and helped them when they went into administration. Checo truly bonded with the team members. Racing Point/Force India became his family. In 2020, Checo won his very first race in Formula 1. After Charles Leclerc collided with him at Turn 4 on the first lap, Perez was dead last. But then fought and made incredible and brave overtakes, and made his altered strategy work unbelievably well. Against all the odds, after being last on the first lap, Checo Perez came through to win the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. It was incredible, unbelievable, and a true testimony to Sergio Perez’s true talent. Which is why he earned a seat at Red Bull Racing for 2021.
When Racing Point brutally cancelled Checo’s contract for 2021-2023 to allow Sebastian Vettel to join the team, Checo didn’t have a seat in Formula 1 for this year. But he proved his worth and is now ready to prove that he is worthy of being a driver for a top team. In 2021, Checo is looking to, along with Max Verstappen, bring Red Bull back to being the Formula 1 Contstructors’ Champions. Only time will tell whether Checo and Max will be successful and whether Checo can make Red Bull his new home for years to come.
