The statement also said, “Fernando is conscious and well in himself and is awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow morning,”. The team did not make any further statements until today morning.
Today’s statement, which was published this morning, said: “Fernando Alonso was kept under observation in hospital in Switzerland. Medics discovered a fracture in his upper jaw and conducted a successful corrective operation. The attending medical team are satisfied with his progress.”
As you can see above, Alonso will remain in hospital for another 48 hours. The team expect Alonso to be back soon, since pre-season testing in Bahrain is only a month away. Pre-season testing will take place in Bahrain from 12th – 14th March. This means that it is even more important that Alonso gets back on track as soon as possible. Soon after pre-season testing will be the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. The GP is going to take place on the 28th of March, not much long after testing.

This season is an incredibly important one for Alonso. The Spaniard retired from F1 after 2018, because he had had an incredibly unsuccessful 4 years with McLaren.
But in 2020, Daniel Ricciardo signed a contract with McLaren, leaving a seat open at Renault. So Alonso decided to reunite with the team that he won his 2 titles with, back in 2005 and 2006. The team had the Renault brand back then, but for 2021 and beyond, Renault rebranded to Alpine F1 Team.
This season is Alonso’s chance to prove that he still has it in him to race and succeed in racing. This is also Renault, or Alpine’s chance to try and take the fight to McLaren, something which they couldn’t do much of last year.
